I've never performed any mods to my 847, but seemed to remember you could 
open up rx or tx or both.  I've done a cursory search of the mod sites, and 
came up with this post mod table:

H.F 1.8 - 37 MHz
VHF (A) 37 - 76 MHz
VHF (B) 137 - 174 MHz
UHF 410 - 470 MHz

I stand corrected on my earlier post, sorry.  If you chose a frequency in 
these extended ranges, more rigs might be available to use the DOD sat.

Maybe someone who HAS made a tx mod can elaborate and confirm the range and 
output?
