Ariane 5 Rocket Blows Up

In a major setback for the European space program, an Ariane 5 rocket
exploded soon after taking off Wednesday, sending two satellites plunging
into the Atlantic Ocean, space officials said.

The explosion was the fourth failure of an Ariane 5 rocket in its 14-mission
history. The failure is likely to halt Ariane 5 flights indefinitely,
pending an investigation. The rocket appeared to make a perfect liftoff from
the European Space Agency's Kourou base in French Guiana - but problems
developed three minutes later, the European launch consortium Arianespace
reported. The nature of the "anomaly" was not immediately known.
