Yup, t'is. I happened to be around when a company was scrapping their
in-house NT RAS servers in favor of running VPN over the Internet, so
there were these nice PCI multiport cards being scrapped that had been
driving modem banks.
I doubt I'll ever lack for serial ports...I'm currently using one for
my Palm Pilot cradle, one for the FT-847 CAT port, one for my KAM PLus,
and the rest are idle...I have the external modem on one of the ports
native to the motherboard. So there's one spare native and a boatload
of spare multiports; I'm going to stick an X-10 Firecracker on one of
them one of these days, we've got several X-10 controlled lights around
the house :-)
