RE: AMSAT-BB-digest V2002 #2

There are quite a few HT's out that have full-duplex capabilities. Just
glancing through the AES catalog I see the Icom IC-W32A, the Kenwood
TH-79AKSS, and the TH-D7A(G) all with full-duplex listed in their specs.
In addition, I believe the Kenwood TH-F6A also offers full-duplex. And,
looking through an old HRO catalog, I see the Alinco DJ-G5TH and the ADI
AT-600-HP can also work full-duplex. I've worked UO-14 and AO-27 with
both the W32 and the D7A. I've also worked the birds using an HT with
an Arrow antenna on the receive side and an ADI 2-meter mobile rig for
the transmit side. What's the best to use? Well, since it is so hard
to answer a subjective question objectively, I guess I would say that
the best one is whichever one works for you.

Donnie and others,

The best HTs for UO-14 (and AO-27) that I've seen are the Yaesu FT-530
and
its predecessor, the FT-470, because, when used with headphones or,
better
yet, a boom-mic headset, they allow you to monitor the downlink while
transmitting so you'll know if you're getting into the
bird. Unfortunately, neither is in current production, so you'll have
to
find them on the used market. If you can live without the
simultaneous-receive capability, I've had very good results with the
FT-50RD which costs less than a VX-5R.

I have had very good luck with the Yaesu FT-51R. This unit is no longer
in
production, but it also allows a full duplex contact. A VOX headset is a
must unless you are an octopus.

Kenwood TH-D7AG is also a full-duplex radio and works with voice and
APRS
birds.

The Alinco DJ580 also has this "full duplex" capability. It's also
not currently in production. I don't know if their newer ones have
FDX capability or not, but it might be a place to check.

The FT-470 will do full duplex both bands quite nicely. I have made
many
contacts with it and the Arrow antenna where I listened to my own
downlink.
The boom mike makes it really easy.
